Many colleges across the country now have programs to help veterans get a degree, and these have proven successful time and again. That includes Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where the school has created its Veterans Center of Excellence.
The center is a converted commuter’s lounge, where veteran students have a kitchen, office, meeting room, and recreation area all to themselves. The center will also be home to workshops, tutoring, and other educational services for veterans. Former servicemembers who attend the school say it has already gone out of its way to make them feel welcome.
The more that colleges nationwide make this kind of outreach effort, the better off veterans will be.
