When veterans are in dire straits, they deserve all the help they need. Unfortunately, it now seems some scam artists are trying to take advantage of them.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that vets are being targeted by scams involving free cellphones and wireless service.

After a few months of free service, victims will receive letters asking them to confirm personal details, ostensibly to ensure they meet requirements for low income. Then the fraudsters will inform veterans that they either have to pay huge sums or lose their service altogether.

With this in mind, veterans have to be careful when being offered assistance, and make sure it’s from a legitimate source. If an offer sounds too good to be true, that’s usually because it is.
