AFBA is always ready, always there for the National Guard

The State Sponsored Life Insurance (SSLI) program provides group term life insurance exclusively for actively serving members of the Army and Air National Guard organizations and their dependents. The program is derived from United States Public Law 93-289, May 24, 1974, to encourage persons to join and remain in the National Guard.

Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA), through its wholly-owned subsidiary, 5Star Life Insurance Company, is a main provider for Basic and Enhanced SSLI coverage. AFBA was established in 1947 with the support of the Chief of Staff and General of the Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower, to promote the general welfare and economic interest of uniformed military service members and their families during peace and war.

As the proud provider of one of the most comprehensive SSLI programs in the country, AFBA has more than 202,000 National Guard members, retirees, and family members with $15.4B of insurance in force and has paid out more than $157M in claims. We provide high-value life insurance protection with no military specialty or combat or war exclusions to our National Guard members and their families.

Who is eligible for SSLI coverage

The states below formed a Basic SSLI pool in order to have exactly the same program offerings and to share risk among the group. The pool is a way for state associations to share in program growth and income which allows them to support their members more effectively. Each year SSLI GPS (Group Pooling States) holds an annual state association meeting to review the previous year’s pool results and plan for the following year

About the briefing

State Sponsored Life Insurance briefings are available annually at the unit level. We are proud to utilize former Soldiers and Airmen who have served in the National Guard honorably to brief the SSLI program ensuring an understanding of and respect for the briefing environment and the soldiers and airmen. The 30 minute briefing includes information on Service member Group Life Insurance (SGLI), Family Service member Group Life Insurance (FSGLI), Traumatic Service member Group Life Insurance (TSGLI), Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI) and State Sponsored Life Insurance (SSLI).

The State Sponsored Life Insurance program provides $1,000.00 of No Cost coverage on all active members of the National Guard. Each state guard association pays for the benefit. During the annual briefings, Soldiers and Airmen will need to designate a beneficiary for this benefit.

At the conclusion of the briefing, members may enroll in additional coverage available under the State Sponsored Life Insurance program. They may also initiate changes to existing coverage to include modifying coverage, changing a beneficiary, updating an address, or adding a dependent.
