Adding more legal protections for first responders has been on the minds of a lot of lawmakers nationwide. Now, Louisiana is the first to actually sign those safeguards into law.

The so-called Blue Lives Matter law will allow prosecutors to add additional penalties for people who target first responders for crimes.

Those penalties could add as much as six extra months of jail time for misdemeanors, and as much as five years for felonies.

Some political experts also believe that this could be the first of many such bills to be passed by state legislatures nationwide.

If that happens, that may be good news for the millions of police officers, firefighters, and EMTs across the country.

Thanks for watching, and be sure to check in again soon for more news about first responders.
