While many veterans issues need careful attention these days, the good news is that many former servicemembers are in a position to make changes. That’s because a growing number of veterans are being elected to public office.

Today, twenty percent of U.S. senators and eighteen percent of U.S. representatives have some military service in their background. That compares to veterans making up just nine percent of the general population.

In addition, about thirteen percent of all state senators nationwide served in the military.

These elected officials tend to be Republican, but thirty percent of veteran U.S. Senators are Democrats.

This Democrat split is also true of about 1 in 4 U.S. representatives, and nearly 1 in 3 state senators.

Thanks for watching!
