Hello and welcome. As a first responder, you’ve taken on the noble responsibility of helping people during emergencies. Often, these events are life-threatening situations, like house fires and major car accidents. Continually experiencing traumatic events can certainly take a toll on your mental and physical health, which is why it’s a good idea to equip yourself with the knowledge and resources you need to properly cope with incidents like these.
Repeatedly witnessing trauma can make you feel alone, but reading books written for people in your position can offer insight into how you can handle your emotions and continue to perform your important duties.
Two recommended books for first responders are “Trauma Stewardship” by Laura van Dernoot Lipsky and “Compassion Fatigue” by Charles Figley.
Thanks for watching, and be sure to check back soon as this series continues.
